Michigan ZIP Map Examples Need Street-Level Proof
Michigan's Department of Technology, Management and Budget (DTMB) static ZIP map places postal labels alongside city and county lines. The 2009-era PDF is useful for orientation, but cannot stand in for today's USPS address file. Its selected labels do not say that a full ZIP sits inside the named city or that a delivery assignment is unchanged.
| ZIP | Areas Covered | Post Office | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 48001 | Algonac area | Map label: Algonac | Postal label is not a city-limit line. |
| 48105 / 48109 | Ann Arbor examples | Map label: Ann Arbor | Two codes, not a single municipal footprint. |
| 48205 | Detroit example | Map label: Detroit | The map also marks carrier-route and PO-box cases. |
| 48340 | Pontiac example | Map label: Pontiac | Confirm parcel municipality locally. |
| 48823 | East Lansing example | Map label: East Lansing | A map label does not establish city limits. |
| 49015 / 49017 | Battle Creek examples | Map label: Battle Creek | Separate codes may serve different delivery areas. |
| 49090 | South Haven example | Map label: South Haven | Check county and municipality on the parcel record. |
| 49423 / 49424 | Holland examples | Map label: Holland | Do not infer the city boundary from the mailing name. |
| 49684 | Traverse City example | Map label: Traverse City | Verify the street address with USPS. |
| 49757 | Mackinac Island example | Map label: Mackinac Island | Map example only, not a full delivery inventory. |
| 49855 | Marquette example | Map label: Marquette | Confirm county and situs address. |
| 49931 | Houghton example | Map label: Houghton | Postal place names can differ from local jurisdiction. |
These entries are representative map examples and groupings, not a complete current list of Michigan's 989 Census ZCTAs or all live USPS postal codes. The number 989 belongs to the Census Bureau's ZCTA guide; a ZCTA is not the same thing as a current postal code. The public map's age and the lack of a current machine-readable Michigan ZIP and post-office list mean a long table would imply certainty the sources do not provide. Use the USPS ZIP Code Lookup by street address for a live delivery check.
Michigan ZIP Ranges Span Several Regions
Michigan's postal map groups codes from 480xx through 499xx, but prefixes are broad regional clues, not a way to pinpoint a parcel. The 480xx and 481xx groups cover metro Detroit, Macomb, St. Clair, Oakland, Ann Arbor, Ypsilanti, Canton, Plymouth and Wayne County communities. Detroit appears in 482xx. The 483–484xx and 485–486xx groups include parts of Oakland, Genesee, Lapeer and central Michigan, including Pontiac, Flint, Saginaw and Midland.
Farther west and north, 487–488xx includes the Thumb, northeast Lower Peninsula, Lansing area and rural post offices; 489xx includes Lansing, East Lansing and state-government mail. The 490–493xx groups reach Kalamazoo, Battle Creek, southwest Michigan and Grand Rapids. The 494–496xx range spans Muskegon, Holland, the northwest Lower Peninsula and Traverse City. Northern Lower Peninsula and eastern or central Upper Peninsula examples appear in 497–498xx; 499xx reaches the western Upper Peninsula, including Houghton, Keweenaw, Iron, Gogebic, Ontonagon and Baraga. Rural routes and township lines can cross these groupings.
Search One Michigan ZIP by Exact Address
A one-ZIP search works best as a narrowing step for a known address or a defined public record. No public tool in the research functions as a complete household list. First check what USPS assigns to the exact address. Then choose a records system that actually accepts the field, and keep the postal result separate from a city, county or voting jurisdiction.
- Verify the delivery code. Enter the full street address in USPS lookup. A mailing city alone may not identify the local government.
- Pick a record question. Use a ZIP field for a facility or license search, or check PSOR's city, county, ZIP and radius options when that registry is the relevant source.
- Resolve land locally. For an owner or parcel question, identify the county and municipality, then search the local assessor or BS&A entry point by address, owner or parcel ID.
- Map voter geography. QVF requests use county, jurisdiction, district, ward or precinct rather than ZIP. Use Michigan.gov/Vote or a clerk to map the address before requesting or checking that record.
When the next question is which records follow a street address, continue with the Michigan street directory workflow. A ZIP filter can narrow the search area, but it does not replace street, parcel or precinct verification.
ZIP Search Fields in Michigan's Public Portals
Michigan tools differ in what a ZIP field means. LARA's statewide facility and license search has a ZIP field and a county selector. PSOR also accepts ZIP, city and county, and it can search around an address by radius. These searches return the record types named by the portal, not every person who receives mail at an address.
| Field or route | Type | Required | Options and limits |
|---|---|---|---|
| LARA facility/DBA, licensee, address, city | Text fields | Not specified in captured form | Use with ZIP, county, status or facility type to locate facility/license records. |
| LARA ZIP code | Text field | Not specified | Search geography for facility/license entries; results are not a resident roster. |
| LARA county, status, facility license type | Dropdowns | Not specified | Buttons include Search, Download CSV and Reset; the portal notes daily updates. |
| PSOR location search | City, county, ZIP; or address plus radius | Varies by search mode | Radius choices are .25, .5, 1, 2 or 5 miles; there is no entire-list download. |
The LARA statewide facility/license search can help confirm a listed facility, licensee or business address. Its ZIP filter answers a licensing question. The Michigan Public Sex Offender Registry has separate public-safety search rules and address-radius modes. Neither system establishes who else lives in the same home.
Michigan ZIP Terms Before You Search
Postal and map terms are easy to mix up. These short definitions keep a mail route, a statistical map and a land parcel in their proper roles.
- ZIP code
- A USPS delivery geography tied to post offices and routes. USPS can change assignments, so check a specific address for current mail service.
- ZIP+4
- The five-digit ZIP plus four more digits that narrow delivery within a route, such as a block, building or delivery unit. It still does not define a city or parcel line.
- PO-box-only ZIP
- A code the map marks for post-office-box service rather than ordinary street delivery. Do not treat it as proof of a residence at the post office.
- Unique ZIP
- A code assigned to one organization or large mail recipient. The map's general labels do not identify a current Michigan list of all unique codes.
- Carrier route
- A postal delivery grouping; the Michigan map includes carrier-route notes. It is not a municipal district or a public list of household members.
- ZCTA
- A Census Bureau statistical area generalized from 2020 Census blocks. It helps map data, but it does not promise USPS delivery to each point inside it.
For a Michigan ZIP code directory search, keep the postal code, Census geography and property record as separate layers. A map can support context without proving where mail goes or which local office holds a parcel record.
Michigan ZIP Names Can Cross Local Lines
Michigan postal geography does not set city or county borders. A ZIP can serve more than one municipality, while a mailing city printed on an address can differ from the city, village or township that governs the parcel. That matters because Michigan property records are maintained at county and municipal levels, not through one public statewide owner-linked GIS. The DTMB tax-parcel page links to county-maintained parcel sources; its statewide parcel layer is internal rather than public Open Data.
For a property question, save the county, municipality, parcel ID and legal description from the local assessor. BS&A Online begins with a municipality choice, and its owner, address and parcel fields vary by place. Michigan's Geographic Framework (MGF) shows municipal, school and county boundaries plus annexation context. The statewide NG911 GIS repository aligns address points and road names, which can help resolve an address label, but it does not replace the assessor's parcel record.
Michigan ZIPs Can Point to Mailboxes
A PO-box-only or unique ZIP does not show that a household lives at a post office, institution or business. DTMB's map marks PO-box-only offices and carrier-route cases, but no current official table names every Michigan code in those groups. A rural code may span townships; its post-office label describes mail handling, not the parcel custodian or municipal services.
Check USPS delivery, then open the local parcel map. “Situs” means the physical site tied to a parcel; a mailing address may instead be a PO box, an out-of-county location or an agent. For a rural road, save the county and township with the standardized address. If road names or numbers differ, compare county address points and assessor fields before treating results as separate places.
Michigan Act 425 Lines on ZIP Maps
Michigan boundary history can explain why a mailing place, map outline and tax office do not line up. Under Act 425 of 1984, a city and township can make a conditional land-transfer agreement lasting up to 50 years without the usual contiguity rule. The Census Bureau's annual Boundary and Annexation Survey checks city, village, township and county changes. These are legal and administrative changes; ZIP assignments remain a postal delivery matter.
For a parcel conflict, compare the MGF boundary layer, municipal clerk records, state boundary documents, a subdivision plat and the assessor. Keep each map or document date. A current line can explain today's jurisdiction, while an older plat or tax record may preserve a former name or boundary. A postal label cannot settle which government maintains the land record.
Michigan ZCTAs Cannot Replace Postal Checks
The Census Bureau lists 989 Michigan ZCTAs, not the number of current USPS delivery codes. ZCTAs use 2020 Census blocks to map statistics; USPS assigns and revises delivery routes, including PO-box or unique codes without a residential shape. The Census ZCTA guidance explains that statistical role. Use it for context, not address validation.
A statewide ZIP code directory cannot claim a complete current postal list from that ZCTA count. Michigan's 2009-era DTMB map gives labeled examples and broad groupings; county parcel pages, assessors and clerks answer land and jurisdiction questions. Do not use a statistical polygon as proof that one city contains every address under its label.
For older Detroit records, account for the city's 1921 address renumbering and use the city's public map and records page before matching an old directory address to a modern parcel.
